Jump Rope for Heart, is where people skip and get donations from others, like family and friends, we raised this money for children with heart problems. We had 5 rotations, one for every whanau. It was a fun morning and it was really nice to see lots of older buddies helping the littler ones. The teachers from every whanau, Te Waka, Te Moana, Te Wheuna, Nga Manu and Te Awa, set up a course or activity, as you will see in the photos below. Well done to everyone that took part in this day, keep skipping!

Inquirers - Here to Stay inquiry guest speakers
On Thursday 13th of November the Inquirers had two guest come in to speak to us about immigration. The first was Cassie (from here) and the other was Thea. Cassie spoke first, she came from Zimbabwe when she was six because her dad had a business offer to come to NZ two years earlier. She said in Zimbabwe it was really hot and dry and she had never seen the beach before, (Zimbabwe is landlocked.)
Thea came from Holland ,Netherlands, and said Holland is a very small but very full country. All the houses are joined together by the walls so if you smashed the wall you would break the neighbors wall as well as your own. Another thing was that the food was different. Another thing was the celebrations because on the 4-5th of December there was a celebration called Saint Nicolas that is just like Christmas.

Tournament of Minds - Australasian-Pacific final - Melbourne
On Thursday 16th of October My tournament of minds team went to Melbourne,(Australia) to compete in the Australasian Pacific Finals. We were one of seven schools from NZ and 80 from Australia and one from Thailand. We got honors and were the only NZ team to win anything. The challenge was called no quick fixes , no easy choices. You had to design a machine that makes choices for you/people. We made an orb that floated around and if you were stuck you could ask it a question eg. "Should I Ride a bike to school or drive a car. It will say the most environmentally friendly answer. Our team was *Kiera *Nadi *Jackson *Connor *Kasia *Me (JACK!)

Tournament of Minds Melbourne trip
Here is the team after checking in at Wellington Airport, we are very excited about our huge adventure ahead!!!!
We had to wait tqo hours for our flight. We entertained ourselves by watching our plane being loaded with all the luggage as well as finding some cool places to take photos.
Our plane was full so it took a long time to get ready and we left half an our late, however we still managed to arrive in Melbourne only 5 mins late.
On the plane we had a yummy dinner and got to watch movies.
When we arrived in Melbourne it was only 6pm as we had gained two hours. After waiting half and hour we travelled on a bus with two other teams from NZ to pour accommodation.
Mrs McKenzie went with us on the bus and then we met the other parents at our accommodation,
after we unpacked we went out for dinner.
Here is a photo of the view of the city from our room!

After being given our instructions we moved off to our designated room with our supervisor.
We then had three hours to work on our challenge. During this time we had morning tea and also had to complete our Spontaneous challenge.
After 3 hours was up we then packed away all our props and materials and returned to the lecture theatre.
During lunch out on the Simpson lawn we were not able to talk about our challenge.
After lunch we moved back into the theatre and presented our 10 min presentation to the other schools and parents.
Here we are setting up for our presentation
Receiving our participation awards
After the presentations we went back to the Simpson lawn for a drumming session with a group of drummers.
At 5.45pm we then moved to the Eagle restaurant in Campus for a yummy buffet dinner.
This included a BBQ, Chinese, Indian food and Pasta.
At 7pm we then moved to the Union hall for the Prize giving

We had to write in 25 words what we thought it was for why it is so important and why it needs to be preserved.
Later on at prize giving it was delayed 45 minutes ....
Then came the applied technology prize giving . The lady said and the winners are ... Kapanui 2!!!

Inquirers Wearable art unit
During term 3 in the Inquirers Syndicate we studied Commonwealth countries. When then used key words from these countries in our story writing. A part of these stories then came to life in our Wearable art designs that we have produced for a production at the end of the term
Here is an example.....
Lantern Chaos
Created By Ellie and Rose
A dragon with striking red scales from his devilish head to his fiery tail sulked on his perch after ruining everything. He humiliated himself at new year celebrations. Instead of getting some dinner, he crashed through lanterns and got tangled.
Fire of the Dragon
Long ago there was a powerful, avaricious dragon. He lived on the very tip of a colossal mountain overlooking a small village. He had terrifying claws that were as sharp as one hundred knives, and wings as big as a house. He had striking red scales right from his devilish head to his spiked tail. Every day he would make a meal out of some of the villagers. He led an easy life and was very selfish and never helped anyone or anything.
One late night, in the chinese new year, the very same dragon stared hungrily at all the celebrations of people from his perch. They would make a mouthwatering meal, he thought. The only obstacle preventing him from getting his food was the fireworks. How they petrified the dragon, they were so loud. Boom! Crack! They were like huge stars exploding in front of your eyes. But the dragons hunger and covet overpowered his fear and he swooped down from his resting place to the celebrations…
The dragon looked around him. To his left he saw a deserted noodle canteen with colourful lanterns hanging from the top of the tent and the beautiful aroma of hot noodles. To his right he saw yet more deserted stalls; fruits, vegetables, ornaments, all the type of marketplace stalls. But where were all the humans? They must be watching the fireworks, thought the dragon. He hid himself behind the noodle canteen and waited.
After about ten minutes a crowd of people rushed back from the fireworks, just as eager to get dinner as the dragon was. There was beginning to be a long line. The dragon sighed with happiness. This was going to be fun, he thought.
Much to the crowd’s horror, the dragon suddenly leaped out of his hiding place and snarled. The dragon opened his mouth and lunged towards the meandering line of people queuing for noodles. But, instead of gulping up a person, he swallowed a lantern instead. The dragon gave an almighty roar of horror, and to his disbelief, fire streamed out of his mouth, scorching his throat and his tongue. He rushed forward and crashed into the big bowl of noodles getting caught up in more lanterns at the same time. Dragon beat his wings furiously crashing through the top of the stall.
That dragon never showed his face again, unless he was out getting food, he was scared of the humiliation he would face. He had ruined the whole race of dragons forever. Now, dragons would never have a good meal that was not toasted, burnt, full of charcoal or smoked. The dragon taught everyone to not be greedy, or else.
Designing & Making
Designing
First, we made lots of rough sketches of our costume- there were about 5. We then processed them to get our final sketch labelled with all the stuff we needed.
We bought in stuff that we needed from home, used some of class things and Mrs Mckenzie brought some as well.
Making
First, we made a dress out of bubble wrap, sewed it- that was hard- and spray painted it red and orange.
Secondly, we painted our mask.
While we were waited for it to dry, we painted eclipse mint cans to make a tail. There wasn't enough red paint so we just spray painted them red instead.
Once the mask was dry we hot glued a orange beanie onto it so it covered Ellie's hair.
After that, we cut out and put our wings together.
Next, I painted two horns- the cone part of an egg carton- and stuck it onto a headband.
Last of all, I spray painted the shoes and made sure they fitted Ellie.

Inquirers Winter Tournament
Winter Tournament
On Thursday the 14th of August kapanui school and all of the schools on kapiti coast did the winter tournament. I chose hockey because it looked fun and I had never done it before. We did 3 trainings before the real day. We left to go to mazengarb at 11 (I was in lower hutt) When we got there I played straight away for another kapanui team , we lost 4-1. In the next game I played for my team and scored no goals but we won 4-0. Next up we played a team that already played hockey and beat them 6-5 , I also scored the first 2 goals and set up 2. In our next game I scored 1 and we won 6-0. In our last game we won 1-0. I also played 3 more games for other kapanui teams and we won 8-1 , 2-0 and lost 3-1. Hockey was really fun and I am going to play after schhol next year
In term 2 and 3 the Inquirers do the winter tournament. We do 4 sports Football A.K.A Soccer , Netball Ripper rugby and Hockey. All of the Classes have to do a circuit of all the sports but the class that doesn't have a sport to do you do Basketball because that is not a winter sport in the competition. We (Room 13) started off with football. To start we did dribbling drills where we dribbled the ball around 4 cones then run to the halfway line and kick it back to the next person in our line/group and then the next person did it and so on... Next we played a small game of football and I scored a goal. We played two games which were , Boys v Girls then soccer players v the rest .
The next Week we did hockey and netball on the same day. We did hockey drills where we had to get past the defenders. Then we played a small game
Afterwards when we played netball we did a passing game where we passed down a line of 4 people , running down the netball court.

Te papa
On Monday the 4th of August, room 13 took the bus to Te papa museum to look at the expeditions there. One of the main reasons we went was to take in ideas for our wearable arts costume. We had some sheets we had to fill in all around the museum. We went to the Matariki exhibit, the culture exhibit and the wearable arts one. We were there all day and went to Frank kitts park for lunch.
We got HEAPS of great ideas for our costumes and everyone wanted to stay longer. We had a fantastic day and got a lot out of it.

Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games (formerly the British Empire Games (1930 - 1950), British Empire and Commonwealth Games (1954 - 1966), and British Commonwealth Games (1970 -1974) is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 and has taken place every four years since.
(Except 1942 - 1946 which were cancelled due to World War II.)
The games are described as the third largest multi - sporting event in the world, after the Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
This year the games commenced on 24th July.
Kapanui School also celebrates this event quadrennially kicking off with their own opening ceremony.
It was held in the school hall, starting at quarter to ten on Thursday 31st July.
Each whanau class represented a country from the Commonwealth of Nations, some featured were Botswana, Cyprus, Bermuda Triangle and England.
However, before commencing the ceremony we had half n' hour to prepare to prepare all our props such as flags and chants. At around 9:30am the whanau classes started to parade into the hall utilizing all their props. It was so stunning as there was an explosion of colours from each of the different whanaus; Te Waka, Te Whenua, Te Awa, Te Moana and Nga Manu.
We were very fortunate to have Rugby Sevens superstar Ashley Drake at our opening ceremony to give us a brief experience of the real Commonwealth games in Glasgow.
Each whanau class was granted 30 seconds to present some facts about their country. (Some had the national anthem playing faintly in the background.)
In between some presentations, there were a range of acts including cheerleading, gymnastics, dancing and karate. The ceremony was filled with lots of interesting information.
The opening ceremony closed off with Cullen Tran (myself) and Iona Peters singing Your Song by Elton John. We all then went back to our classes for morning tea.
After our morning tea which consisted of 20 minutes, the fun was about to begin! Due to the bad weather, all the games were held inside. For each game you went to, the teacher would score you out of ten for a) Excellence in the activity and b) Team spirit and encouragement, as an extra the teacher could decide to give you bonus points. Each whanau class had to go around 6 classes each for different games which lasted 15 minutes each. So, this in total took 1 hour and a half. There were a variety of different games such as Tiddly Winks, in which you had to use a big counter to cast small counters into a plastic counter inside a chalk-drawn circle. There was also a game where you used a fly swat as a golf club to dribble a ping pong ball around some cones. It was really fun and I can't say that no body didn't enjoy themselves.
The medal presentations were to be held the next day at assembly.
The medal presentations:
On Friday 1st August, at 2pm we had our closing ceremony. I could clearly see all the students in tension busting for the results to be announced. Everyone tried their best but their could only be three with medallions. Here are the results as followed:
1st place: Nigeria (Gold)
2nd place: Cook Islands (Silver)
3rd place: Botswana (Bronze)
Thank you very much to everyone who helped make this day a success and for taking your time to read my article.
