Rangatahi Road Patrol Training

It's getting this time of year where as the Year 8's leave Kapanui School and go to college, the Year 7's take over for their jobs, such as Mediators. On the Wednesday 27th November 2013, the Year 7’s had their training for being road patrol wardens for next year.

We started off watching a video. After we watched the video we went onto the field acting as if we were holding the sign and saying “Signs out”, “Check”, “Clear”, “Cross now” and “Signs in”. After we have done this for a while we went out onto the road and did a real life practice. We all took turns being the leader, and to make the real life practice more realistic we had some people crossing the road.

Rangatahi Electricity Speakers

On the last day of October (Thursday 31st October 2013) we had two speakers come in to talk to us about electricity. They were from Wellington Electricity and explained everything/most things about electricity that they knew. They gave us a demonstration about how electricity takes the most direct route to the ground. They also gave us a talk about car vs pole (car crashes into a power pole) and how the wires overhead could come down and when the car driver comes out of the car they could be shocked

Rangatahi Technology Challenges

Rangatahi Technology Challenges

In Week 2 of Term 4 we have been doing some technology challenges. They range from making a skateboard ramp (marble run made with newspaper) to making a net out of newspaper to catch a baby (and hold one of their team-mates), along with making a device to get a balloon from 3 metres away with limited supplies. We also created a bag to carry a 1.25KG weight fifty meters without dropping it in the fastest way possible. These have been very fun challenges which is great for team building and designing. Most of these challenges have been tricky in a lot of ways and some people couldn't finish them as they were also competitive.

Rangatahi Golf

This term the Rangatahi syndicate had golf on the Wednesday 18th September 2013. We were going to have it the week before but it was rained off. At golf we played bowls, both with and without the golf clubs. We also had a go at hitting five items with the golf "stick", and they were a spiky plastic ball (that doesn't if you touch the spikes), a something and three rubber golf balls. The reason the golf balls were rubber is for safety.

On the day, we got put into our groups then started driving to Paraparaumu. We arrived at our sport ground in a matter of time and were told when we were getting on the court or field. We got to play heaps of other schools.
It took about 2 hours and then rushed back to school.

Rangatahi Winter Tournament

This term the Rangatahi syndicate are doing Winter Tournament. It is just like doing winter tournament in the Inquirers except it is more competitive and you do the sport that you play regularly. There are four sports: Hockey (with Mr Wynn), Soccer (Football, with Mrs Richards), Rugby (with Mrs Gilmore) and Netball (with Mrs Burrows). Winter Tournament was on Tuesday 27th August 2013 starting at 9:30am and was on for the rest of the day. Only the selected people get to go (not everyone goes). Soccer and Hockey were both at Mazengarb Reserve, Paraparaumu, while Netball and Rugby were at the Te Atiawa Courts and Park. Winter Tournament is a clash with technology at Otaki College and to solve this the people that were going to Winter Tournament didn't go to technology. People not going to Winter Tournament went to technology.

     Life Education

During term 3 the Life Education trust caravan visited Kapanui School. Years 1-6 got the opportunity to visit the caravan and learn about topics such as Friendship. Paula was our fantastic teacher in the caravan and we did heaps of fun activities.

Peace Week

Peace Week

At the beginning of term 3 was peace week. This was an important week to focus on the meaning of peace and what we can do to make sure we all live in Peace. Heaps of classes did Peace activities during class time. The Mediators also ran lunchtime activities promoting Peace, eg making paper cranes. It was also celebrated at Whanau time on Friday. Te Waka whanau talked about Peace and then wrote a peace message on a dove or heart. These were then displayed on a large Dove shape.

Electricity guest speaker

                                                     Electricity speaker

On Thursday the 1st of August 2013, the fantastic Wellington electricity crew came to Kapanui school to talk about how to be safe with electricity. This was part of the Inquirers Syndicate "It's Electrifying" unit.
EG: don't touch transformer posts. If you touch it too close, it can be strong enough to get you seriously injured for a life, be in hospital or even kill you!!!
Electricity travels everywhere, through power points to transformers to power lines to homes.
This is an experiance for everyone to do.

Carter Observatory Visit

Carter Observatory Visit

On the 16th of May 2013 Room 10 went to Carter Observatory for a special start to the Matariki topic that the entire school is doing. We went to Carter Observatory on the bus, not on the train as intended, sadly. When we arrived at 9:30am the observatory the sign said it was closed. We were all surprised!  We waited until someone came, and the person that did come was very funny. (Picture 2) He took us inside and flipped the open/closed sign to open. We then went into the educational room (Picture 3) and he talked to us about the planets and the International Space Station (ISS) and did some activities.
When he finished talking he let us explore the exhibits and then 30 minutes later we had to go into the movie room and watched a movie about Russia and America and their achievements.
After the movie we left and went to the playground in the Botanical Gardens and had lunch and a little play.
10 minutes later we went back to the bus and got driven back to Kapanui School at 1:30pm
